I make upright basses in 3/4 size. These are designed to be more portable and smaller over-all than regular uprights, and still retain the 42" scale.
The scroll has been eliminated, saving about eight inches, and the bridge has been moved down to the wide part of the lower bout for better boom, and to shorten the neck. The cutaway restores full fingerboard access, to the standard 3/4 size fingerboard.
As most basses are not played with a bow, i have lowered the bridge and attached the fingerboard to the top for more "slapabillity" . These basses do not have soundposts and are braced like a giant jazz guitar. This makes them a lot richer in tone, but if you play arco, i can build yours with a higher bridge. The elimination of the soundpost allows the sound hole to be moved up to the top, making the bass easier to hear and to mike.
The handle is worth its weight in perspiration, if you play at festivals or outdoor parties.
These usually come with Baltic birch laminated back and side, with the sides being double thickness for strength. The tops are usually Poplar, but Mahogany, Spanish Cedar, and Spruce are available for an extra charge. Default fingerboard is Maple, but other woods are available on special order.
Uprights start at $1,000.
